Junior Intern Program

Junior Intern Company

The Barn’s Junior Intern Company is comprised of 30 young performers aged 12-18 who, over the course of nine weeks, rehearse, build, and perform plays and musicals for young audiences. The Junior Interns not only play all of the roles in each of the productions, but they also help with organizing and planning technical and design elements, as well as help in the running of the shows. JIs also get a chance to work with  professional guest directors, choreographers, and actors, and the Barn’s Artistic Director, Keith Coughlin.

The 2018 Children’s Theater Series,
performed by the Junior Intern Company:

• Play Ball! • Puss in Boots • Love’s Labour’s Lost • Giants in the Sky • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

The company rehearses Mondays through Fridays, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM (including a lunch break), with performances on select Thursdays and Saturdays. The full program runs from June 18th through August 18th, with each production getting two or three weeks of rehearsals. Junior Intern productions are directed and choreographed by Director of Education, Josh Feder, as well as guest directors. Other events, such as performances at the Market on the Green, “JI Nights” for the Main Stage productions, and outings to other local performances and events will be announced throughout the summer.

Besides mounting highly professional shows for consistently sold-out houses, this performance-based program fosters individual growth in performance skills as well as nurturing an ensemble experience where each member supports and encourages their castmates. Theater games and educational exercises, in conjunction with the work toward each production, develop the performance skills of each member of the company.

For show dates and descriptions, and to purchase tickets, please see the Children’s Theater Series page

Junior Internship is also available for teenagers in the technical aspects of theater, in the areas of Sets/Lights, Costumes, and Stage Management. Tech JIs will work closely with our Technical Director, Costume Designer, and/or Stage Manager to help with the building and painting of sets and props, running the light board and spot lights, helping to measure and build costumes, and assist in running rehearsals and backstage. Interested students should interview and apply to one, two, or all three categories of our Tech programs. Interviews are held at the same time as auditions for the acting JIs.

Auditions will be held in on April 7th at Whipple Hall in New London and 8th at Northern Stage in White River. Please sign up for an audition after March 1 by emailing at education@nlbarn.org. For auditions, please prepare a short passage of a song, as well as a poem/monologue of your choice (each should be under a minute).

For teens interested in a Backstage Junior Internship, please sign up for an audition slot to interview with the staff.

If you cannot make these auditions, please email education@nlbarn.org for more information or to learn how to audition at another time.

PROGRAM FEE:  The program fee is $900.00 for the full 9 weeks, payable at time of registration. We are able to keep this extraordinarily low fee with help from our Annual Fund.  We feel that it is important that theater education be affordable as we train tomorrow’s theater  lovers and performers.  Additionally, we do have a tuition forgiveness program in place, with partial and full scholarships available. Finally, we are able to pro-rate the fee for partial-season membership on a case-by-case basis. Please email education@nlbarn.org with questions regarding the program fee and/or scholarships.

LOCAL TALENT:  Please note that this program is intended for those who live in the area, or have local housing options during the summer months (eg: families with summer homes in the area, or who have extended family/friends who live nearby). We are not an overnight camp, and as such we are unable to provide housing. Thank you for understanding.
